Wiebe is currently working on two distinct projects, one with Electronic producer Elijah Lucian, the other with engineer Adam Burwash, the same team that produced his first album, Shipwrecked... My Sentiments. The latter project is slated to be a collection of stripped-down Acoustic songs that better reflect his intimate live performances. His fans have expressed interest in both projects, and intend to help him reach a new audience in some unique ways.
Wiebe has a rich cultural upbringing, having lived in Japan for 8 and a half years, visiting countries like Malaysia and the Philippines in the process. He spent most of his formative years in Japan, where he learned to speak, read and write Japanese as a young boy.
Wiebe was selected as a finalist in Airdrie Dick's Pub's Acts Exposed contest and played at Music in the Park, an outdoor concert held at Riley Park in the heart of Calgary. He also performed with guitar student Tim Snelgrove at the Canada Day Parade outside of Music Centre Canada in Airdrie. His performance experience also includes a variety of coffeehouses, lounges, weddings, anniversaries, and special events.
Wiebe's desire is to inspire and encourage people with his music, and help others with the same vision. He believes that music can communicate emotions and moods in ways words cannot, and this has always been a part of his fascination with song and melody. His current projects reflect his passion for continual growth as a musician and as an individual. He aspires to explore his creativity and stretch out in ways he never has before.
In October 2007 Wiebe performed at the Strathcona Showcase and the response was overwhelming: "Dave Andrew Wiebe was the surprise of the night. Writing all his own songs and accompanying himself on his guitar, his voice told stories the audience liked to listen to" (The Gazette, December 2007).
Shipwrecked... My Sentiments
David Andrew Wiebe's solo debut features 10 original Folk-Rock songs resulting from a particularly difficult year in his life. In 2005 Wiebe's cousin Mitch took his own life, his band decided to take an extended break, and relational conflicts and tension soared to an unprecedented high. The Bluesy "Six Sides" talks about his frustration with previous band work, the atmospheric "Not By A Long Shot" outlines his struggle with trying to live up to an ideal, and the blistering "Between The Lines" expresses what it's like to be on a path that's coming to an end. This powerfully emotional and heartfelt effort is highlighted by Wiebe's seemingly boundless creativity and guitar virtuosity. The music ranges from Rock and Blues to Jazz and Funk, and sets the groundwork for future releases from this gifted Canadian.
